I tried to watch the State of the Union address on YouTube but it never did quite load for me to watch. Then I realized even though we own a television, I don't know what channel it would be on or how to get to the channel guide. People cannot believe that I do not watch television. EVER. Well, if I'm walking by a television with a show on I might stop and watch for a few minutes…. but that doesn't really count. π
When people in my life look at me like I have two heads because I don't know the latest going-on's from Dancing With the Stars, American Idol or any of the Housewives shows, they give me this 'deer in headlights' look. Then I ask them about net neutrality, SOPA, issues pertaining to women's rights, LGBT issues, alternative education topics, professional growth, entrepreneurship, etc. – their ignorance of those issues makes me give them the same look. o_O

Standard broadcast tab.
There is a middle ground. =)
Hasn't watched a minute of corporate TV in over 10 years
SOTU is usually on every major network (ABC, CBS, NBC)
In all honesty Ms Young, I do not for a single moment believe that we have missed anything
It's on all local channels here.
I read about social and political topics…while watching semi mindless TV…I also get looked at with two heads. π
How true. btw : try http://www.ustream.tv/whitehouse – I'm British in England watching it π
Haven't watched TeleVerminator (TV) for six or seven yrs, don't miss it at all. "_)
It's great to know someone else does not watch TV! I don't watch television either. I just couldn't justify the bill any more. It's been 5 years and I haven't missed it a bit. If I want to watch something it is usually online.
I think there is nothing wrong with that. I am not a huge tv person myself, and when someone talks about a show and I ask what station it is on… I get a dumb look from them as if I should know. Honestly between school, work and homework for college, the tv probably knows me better than I know it, and it probably knows that I really do snore!
I'm with you +Lynette Young! We don't watch TV here either. I am clueless as to the latest stuff on TV. I did locate the President's speech being given on msnbc (internet).
I know what will be said during the SOTU – I am more of a people-watcher. I like to see how people (and politicians – yes, they are people) handle themselves, present themselves, how their speechwriters put 'hooks' into what they say. Now I'm not saying the only reason I would watch it is because I'm looking for pointers as a presenter myself. I think that if I'm a citizen of this country I should be paying attention to my government.
Lord have mercy!
For the record, we have two televisions. We only own two because my brother was selling his and we bought it from him to get him a decent price π My mom lives with us and she has her own (so I guess we have three in the house). We are big movie watchers and XBOX fans. So we DO 'use' a television, we just don't watch the garbage that is on broadcast cable.
Well I have to ask, do you feel lost sometimes because you don't know about the latest television series when with a group that does? Or do you just walk away and have another martini?
When we moved to Philly we put our TV in the basement. We only have broadband, I miss what I always wanted to miss.
+Shawn Hinton wine – I haven't had a martini in years π To be honest, I can pick up enough about television from being online to at least know what is going on in a conversation. For example, I live in New Jersey and have never seen an episode of The Jersey Shore but sure as heck know who Snooki is.
I own a television that is hooked to nothing other than the Nintendo Wii. Cable isn't available here and I don't have a regular antennae hooked to it. There's never been anything on it I wanted to see. If something is urgent or important, it will be online.
Hahaha it was on almost every channel and every major network so you could have just turned it on and you would have seen it!
I had the same issue with YouTube until I pulled it up on my phone.
I don't watch TV either. It's a huge waste of time with today's crap. I have a DVB capture card for my computer though, mostly for playing around with the protocols and signals over the air. I can hardly even be in the same room as a TV, it's so distracting. There's even a couple of restaurants I refuse to go to because they have more TVs than waitstaff…
I'll hook a TV up as soon as Firefly goes back on the air. A little NOAA weather radio more than makes up for keeping one around for "emergencies".
Not really, Nancy. I've got an "ordinary" friend. When my smartypants friends come over, he leaves. He feels left out. Duh!
TV's are big monitors, lots you can watch on them and they are a huge content distribution device – remind me to talk to you about Roku channels.
You want the reality of TV? I can tell you because i work in the same industry. Rule one. There is no such thing as reality TV. Thats a joke. I f for example you are watching a show like COPS. Then you also have to believe that police officers go out on patrol with camera crews in their back seats. And thats absurd, because it would never happen..Period. They are all actors who work from scripts written by professional writers.
Every writer who writes anything for TV has it mandated in their job description that they must write so that any 7th grader can understand. and that includes the guys who write for the news you see…I am not making this up and am only telling it like it is.
Ok? Now lets take a show like National Geographic. Thats an institution that's trusted by many people. But guess who owns National Geographic? Why its none other than Rupert Murdoch. and News Corp.
You ever see any of the shows where they are in Africa and they catch a bunch of poachers and then make a big bonfire and burn all the tusks? And make a big statement about preserving wildlife? its all staged. Think about it. No African nation is going to allow anyone to burn something thats worth millions… It simply does not work that way.
That would be equivalent to us allowing someone to burn up an oil well just so they could make a statement for the enthralled TV audience. The news networks are all; owned by huge corporations who most definately have an ulterior agenda… General Electric owns

GE CEOs play golf with presidents, senators and congressmen. GE is one of the richest entities in the world. They make more profit than the GNP of many nations. Yet in the year 2010, GE paid no taxes. Many people think of GE as that nice guy who makes the cute commercials selling lightbulbs and toasters….RIGHT?? In fact, I bet most people would have the good general over for dinner…But guess what? GE makes other things too that they never advertise because some of those things would make people really begin to wonder about GE.
Things like the guidance systems for ICBMs. (INtercontinental Balistic Missiles) In layman's terms, NUCLEAR WARHEADS. Still want the generaL OVER for dinner?
I used to get the "guilt trip" for not enjoying movies as much as my honey ( I often get bored or fall asleep unless it is a real good movie.) I will watch a couple shows like Criminal Minds but I don't watch much tv. I don't know the buttons on the remote either. I know the power buttons well tho since somebody is always leaving a tv on here!
+Dr Eeam I'm intrigued and impressed. It makes so much more sense now! I wondered why I had lost interest! Thanks for sharing! By the way your profile is pretty amazing too!
The news departments of all the networks all report to the entertainment dept.s. That means the news that many people believe to be true and factual are categorized as entertainment. Entertainment by its very nature is the same as any other business. The purpose of any business is to make a profit.. Profit is more important then you and your family or anyone else for that matter.
The real truth of the matter is that your TV set is really just an electronic salesman in a clever disguise. We all cringe at the idea of having to deal with a car salesman, and we all get nauseous at the sight of a vacuum cleaner salesman coming to our doors.. But when the salesman comes in the form of a TV set we go out and willingly buy one and put it in our house ourselves. And look at whats on.
Ads telling you how many more friends you could have if only you wore their shoes. How much better your life would be if only you drove this car. How much happier you would be if only you ate these kinds of burgers..Whats an ad?? Its a sales pitch all dressed up in pretty colors and catchy songs whose purpose is to convince you that you need something you dont have. But the reality is that maybe for the first 5 months you get to drive to work in a new car, but after that things start to wear and get lose, and you still; owe the bank a lot of cash
And seeing as Im on this terrible truth thing, I may as well tell the rest…Most Americans believe that the action in Iraq was a fight for freedom. and justice. Because that's what their TV told them. But it forgot to remind them that the mr Bush created facts out of thin air that were not true to use as a justification to invade IRAQ….BECAUSE not a single thing he said about Iraq was true. No weapons of mass destruction were ever found., no connection between Iraq and 9./11 was ever made..And the worlds most powerful military force invaded whaT WAS essentially a 3rd world nation and during the course of 8 years murdered over 1.5 million civilians, displaced and destroyed the homes of over 5 million people. Thats more than any other nation at any time in history..over 5 million orphans. Thats 1/2 the countries children..
Do you think any one who watches TV in America is aware of this? Or for that matter how about that tribunal who operated under the same rules and guidelines as the guys who ran the Nuremberg trials and found George Bush and Tony Blaire guilty of war crimes????
Im not even warmed up yet, because there is a lot more than that..lol
Always knew, but not the details. Don't wind up "disappeared" to Gitmo!
<~~~Hasn't watched TV for over 10 years and people don't quite believe it either.
There's a reason I knew I liked you π

You can watch it on C-Span right now and MSNBC is commenting on it. It was on every cable news channel & the local stations even PBS.
Ironically, a fellow Canadian Redditor posted this image of his cable television schedule with the caption "A Canadian considers what to watch on TV tonight…" http://i.imgur.com/7ox8B.jpg
Right on! Lucky for me I just know everything there is to know about everything so manage to avoid those looks. Seriously though, I can take or leave the TV. I do enjoy my comedies though… I tend to forget how much your average joe doesn't know about tech and talk myself into a pit of glazed eyes!
+??? ?????? -thATS REALLY a stupid thing you said about caring about country. and u have no biz telling anyone what they should and shoudnt be proud of seeing as she is only talking about how she does not watch TV…What if anything does watching TV have to do with caring about country??? It just shows how much you dont care that you look stupid now…ANd how much you care about your country…lmao
You might not be watching all the trashy shows, but there are some really good shows on the networks that have great storylines and amazing acting. I know you're a Game Of Thrones fan – and if you haven't watched it – you should. Season 2 is a few months away. Sons of Anarchy, Southland, Burn Notice – all great shows. I agree that Americans need to watch less trashy TV and read more (both reading up on issues, and read books) but I don't think all TV is horrible. You have to pick and choose. I'm not sure I can completely believe you couldn't find the state of the union address, though. I know you could have Googled it and watched it online while doing something else on the PC! π
+Rob Usdin actually I have watched Game of Thrones. I just realized it is television! I always felt that it was a movie spread out over time π I don't watch it when it plays on television 'live' though. My schedule is way too hectic to watch shows when the networks say I can.
Then +Lynette Young that's why they have that neat little invention called a "DVR"–check 'em out.
DVR: The death of TV advertising
+Rob Usdin One word: DVD's. (Or, streaming.) No cable/broadcast required, stop & start on my own terms, closed captioning available, no commercials…
Just started watching Bones.
(I'm somewhat surprised at the several chiding replies… It's almost like some of you are offended she doesn't watch TV. Huh?)
+Cindy Brown I prefer DVR myself, but I use Tivo instead of the cable company's DVR, and I pay about the same. Some people cut the cord, I'm more in the "cut the cable company box" camp. Not ready to ditch cable TV altogether.
Who has time to watch TV when there are so many other things to do?
