As a the founder of a family-owned small business as well as a parent, I feel it is vital that children be allowed to see up close what it takes to not only run a company but integrate it within a family. As you can see from the photo, I kept both my kids quite busy for the day!
I had intended our day to be spent folding brochures, shooting and editing both live video and screencasts, running bank/post office errands, finishing some reports. While we didn’t get everything completed the kids DID have a great time, learned SOME and went to Chipotle and Starbucks.
The kids are with us a lot when we are working so spending a special day seeing us “at work” was sort of just an excuse for a day off school. As business owners, we really don’t do Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. EVER. Work is integrated into life. Life is integrated into work. I do strongly feel that as young adults both the kids should have traditional (notice I didn’t say “real”) jobs but in my heart of hearts I hope that their future points them to build a life similar to how my husband and I have – running our own business, on our own terms, taking our own punches to the gut, making our own mistakes, building our own value and worth, and living an inspired life within a lifestyle of our design.
