I'm not an expert by any means of what traditionally has been known as SEO – 'search engine optimization'. Luckily the web is changing and people no longer search for information they search for knowledge.
Computers cannot produce knowledge, only people can. So, how do we get from 'information search' (how we are accustomed to seeing search results) to a 'knowledge search' (information with the addition of human opinion)? Do you know how to craft and execute the tricky and sometimes complicated waters of promoting yourself as a thought leader in your particular area of expertise? These are the things I think about every single day and work with clients on.
Having people find your content online is important, but it is more important for people to find you and associate you with knowledge.

PS – Upon performing a search for "Social Engagement Optimization" I see others have used the term before. The phrase is something I've been saying for quite some time (most of my past few years of conference talks have video of me using the term), but I didn't invent it even if I didn't realize others used it before me!
interesting equation
I still say Attention is King, content has lost the throne and did long ago when not only my inbox but my Twitter and Facebook wall became so clogged with crap…. Well you know the rest :]
I agree. Good thoughts.
I believe it depends on what exactly you need to find +Lynette Young
Google currently has "basic" search algorythms, where one strong point creates a web of weaker sub points, of possible interests for you to choose from.
It might be a while before their search engine(s) will also start pointing for additional relevent information, that while being basic or ommited, could also fall into the "looking from different angle" category.
I hope this makes sense (lol)
like it
I think this is a little overstated, but interesting still. People very much look for information (meaning raw facts and know-how that they can use for themselves), but they can't find it easily without it being curated, and curation requires knowledge. Just my take.
+Kevin von Duuglas-Ittu I took the course from Google search and learned a lot from it next time it is available try it Each word makes a difference in a search for information
hahahaha
Lynette, thank you for rounding out or redefining and expanding the definition search, information and knowledge. This assit me in seeing more clearly. Take care and live well.
Attention is king. I second that as well.
You know you are right william johnson. If you don't know how to use the search engine you will get varied results and one may not even get what they are looking for. Knowledge is the key and learning the way the search engine is used is the key. I never took the google search engine course but i may do that the next time it comes around myself. When i look for something like many i use different key words to find what i am looking for. Usually that works for me but i probally could save alot of time looking if i knew how to properly use the google search engine.
oui
Social is not SEO, and SEO will never stand for "Social Engagement Optimization". Just my .02 cents from my 17 years of SEO experience.
I have to completely disagree +Lynette Young . Granted I have about a year of doing extreme SEO research for the marketing firm I work for, I have 14 years experience doing searches for random stuff. And ever since social media exploded, and all these social media "experts" have been coming out of the wood work, I have yet to actually land on any form of social media outlets that talks about my particular search term. I always come across a blog post or a website dedicated to said search term. The social media buzz lost it's momentum as soon as these pages and accounts started spamming these "like if you agree" "+1 in 3 seconds" posts to gain unnecessary exposure for empty content. Social media will NEVER replace a true SEO plan.
Cool
yah i see that
SMO will continue to be SMO, and SEO will always stand for Search Engine Optimization. I don't expect that SEO will change its meaning to be "social engagement optimization".
That's not, in any way, to indicate that social is not a big part of online marketing as a whole. SEO, when done properly, relies on SMO and social shares (and social engagement) to be successful. You won't be successful in getting better organic search engine rankings if you don't include SMO as part of your online promotional strategy.
