A new +eMarketer article states:
"According to the study, women with a smartphone or tablet were more likely to restrict activities like social networking and emailing to a mobile device, leaving the desktop or laptop PC for other uses. Men, by contrast, were more likely to use IM and online banking exclusively on a mobile device."
I've actually had conversations with women about this type of behavior. There are quite a bit of 1-computer families in my town and it seems the women will take their smartphone or tablet and surf/chat social media sites while the household computer is being used by other family members (gaming, bill paying, homework, etc.) What this tells me is, in these instances, women are more likely to let others use the computer instead of 'holding it up' with activities of their own. Plus it's easier to multi-task when mobile – sometimes only have time while cooking dinner or on the field watching at a child's game.
I don't think that's the entire explanation, though. I've known plenty of single women with ample access to their PC who went mobile-only for social networking the minute they could. I don't know the full explanation, but it's more than just sharing a PC.
I have to remember how removed I am from normal people about these matters. I have multiple computers and mobile devices.

(I should have added, it's also useful when sneaking a peek while making coffee at work.) We each have laptops in my house too, but there are many families I know that do only have one desktop to share – it's just not a big part of their lives somehow.

+Shells Bells This is the case with many houses. Many people do not have the same level of technological literacy, and I have to be cognizant of the varying degrees of technological literacy. Most people are not that literate outside of a few professions. They may know some very basic tasks, but not necessarily how to fully utilize a computer.
