Rules are rules – if this woman won your contest because she got the most votes (as you stipulated in the contest) who are you to not honor your word? She won by a landslide, and now you won't grant her the prize because you think what… she's fat? News flash for you AA, she's the average size of an American woman. You know, the very same country you manufacture and market your clothes in. YOU were looking for a plus-size model, she looks to fit the part. Unless of course you view a size 8 as plus-size compared to your usual size 2 models.
Let's be honest here, I'm not really a fan of American Apparel. The largest size they carry is XL which, based on personal experience as an American woman, fits roughly a size 10. Granted, I'm not the 'demo' for AA because I'm over 22 years old and over a size 8. Here's a tip, just because you make all your clothes in this country doesn't zero out all the other assine things you do or say.

Well just because she is average size dont mean its a good thing. There was a time in america where being overweight was not the norm, why is being a healthy weight demonized and being overweight is celebrated as a great thing. No wonder childhood weight problems are on the rise with Diabetes and other such problems related to weight.

I hadn't seen this one before. I think she looks fabulously sexy and smart. I think she shows a vibrant intelligent sense of humor, and it is American Apparel's loss to not use her in their ad campaigns. I hope she got some good exposure out of it.

The larger problem is that as a culture we tend to conflate our culturally-informed aesthetics with moral judgments and, consequently, presumptions about health (since in our society we strongly link the concepts of morality and health). Absolutely, obesity is related to diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension… there's a very long list. However, it's an imperfect link, and we can't immediately assume she's unhealthy, nor that she doesn't deserve our respect for challenging popular notions of beauty and social acceptability.
She reflects authenticity that American women don't want to see in themselves.

Im not saying those skinny boney ass women r the proper image either they are the other end of the spectrum and just as unhealthy. There is nothing wrong with eating pizza and indulging every now and then. But this country has health problems when children are and people being obese which is not normal

Unless you are a medical physician +Robert Downs, you can't make those statements. Period. We don't know how tall she is, her genes, etc. Some ladies are not engineered to be what you would consider a normal weight. Back in day as you speak, the average size of a woman was 14. Was that healthy / unhealthy? Girls who are "average" can be more unhealthy. But unless we know her actual physical stats, no one can claim she is unhealthy.
Being overweight CAN be unhealthy, depending on how you got there. I don't view her as obese. I see a curvy woman who is confident and happy about who she is and fearless enough to take a stand.

The whole over-weight = unhealthy thing isn't as cut and dry as ppl would like. My Mom is overweight according to magazines and BMI charts but she's fit, active, and her numbers (blood numbers from physicals, etc) are all those of a healthy, younger person. My guess is some in this thread would call her unhealthily fat but they'd be wrong. Even her doctor agrees. Her set weight is higher than she'd want but it looks good on her and all indications are she's healthy as a horse… I wouldn't say it to her like that though. 🙂
It's their contest; they can decide to pick up their ball and go home, if they want. But like +Robert Downs said, actions have consequences. Consequence here is that people will call AA on the fact that they acted like jerks, and as the word spreads, some people will decide not to shop with them. (I'd call that a net win.)

I read the entire article. I still think it was an unfair move. If you won a contest fair and square and a company decided they didn't want to use you because they claim you were making fun of them (without evidence), I think you'd be suspicious as well if not ticked off.
