I find that in general, women apologize much more than men do. And it's usually for the strangest things. I started noticing the "I'm sorry" tendency at the last few conferences I attended. Women will apologize for having to step out to take an important call or for running out of business cards. It is what it is, no need to apologize!

I am one of the worse for saying sorry, I have been in situations where I have said sorry and my husband has turned to me and said "but they were in the wrong", and I have gone "I know". I think it becomes a habit and one that is hard to break.
I apologize when it is truly something I did wrong or could have prevented. Other than that too bad!

A quick 'sorry' can often be a sign of respect for others around you. In many cases, it is simply being polite.
What actually is irritating is saying umm, so like in every sentence!
At the risk of wandering hopelessly off-topic, who wouldn't apologise for interrupting a meeting to take a call? Perhaps this is an instance of British and American culture being more different than they first appear, but where I work that sort of thing would get your card marked very quickly…
