Why would people that are doing video online (for a Hangout, video / podcast – whatever) purposefully have their big huge microphone in their face during the show? I'm not impressed. I'd rather see the person's face – not a huge expensive microphone thank-you-very-much.

Maybe their headset broke?
When doing a videocast one of the most important things is being able to clearly hear the person and with good quality. Headsets are crappy for recording!
Maybe they are a reporter for infowars.com…..we just want to make sure that you can hear us clearly…:)
I'm pretty sure Steve was being sarcastic. 😉
everyone has a different comfort level
But, but I've bought a huge expensive microphone…
I try to keep mine out of my face and off camera but when my daughter is awake that results in all kinds of background noise. When that happens I flip a -10db switch on my mic and keep it right in front of my face (well actually just below) then all my background noise magically disappears 🙂
I'm watching a video from CNET now. The guy has a big HUGE microphone in the shot. It is very distracting to me.
I feel the huge expensive microphone isn't for show, it's for audio quality.
Actually my high quality headset DID break! I try to place my mic by the side.
I think the main reason you see this like +Phillip Weimer said is all about audio quality. If you aren't in a properly designed studio where you control all background noise etc it could be problematic to have microphones off camera or at a distance since they need to boost their input to pick up the voice which is farther away from the mic therefore it'll pickup more background noise. Or they have good lapel mics etc.
You are right though…there are situations where people just do it for show 😉
There are a number of things that have started bugging me lately with the ON AIR Hangouts..the micro phone is one.. typing when someone is speaking..why don't people mute ..and the fact that the Part of the show that isn't ON AIR is in the end video.
Are there no ways to edit those videos?
LOL!
Everyone has their own style and perhaps that is theirs?
+Clare Cosgrove HOA's have a very basic way of being edited after they are published to YT, but not a lot of people bother. I always download mine, edit them, and re-upload because those things irk me as well.
It's the cool look factor there going for, at least in there mind.
Oh trust me, I'm a fan of audio quality – I've been a podcaster since 2004 & have thousands of dollars in professional equipment (and I know how to use it). I just hate when people think the equipment needs to be in the shot.
You know men like to show off their big equipment
+Jane Ellen I think we will have to recreate "Godwin's Law" for the "+Matt Makowsky Law"….. something about men showing off equipment reminded me of Makowsky <grin>
He does have swagger

Audio quality, I have a big mic in front of me and yes it is distracting. But most of us have a bigger audio audience than a video audience so the 160k that listen get great audio and the 50k that watch have to be annoyed by the mic 🙂
