I have to side with +Jay Baer on this one – tactics and strategy are so often misused and confused. Knowing how to use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn & Google+ does not mean you know how to use them well, or use them in the specific context of your business and goals. You need a strategist, even if you are a small business (or you need to learn how to be a strategist). The perk with a strategist (or good ol' fashioned business analyst as another example) is that they should must have experience in a number of companies and bring all that knowledge to the table. People, especially people that have worked at the same company for any great length of time, have a myopic view of business in a global sense. A great strategist or analyst brings professional diversity and experience to the table to get you to think & act outside the box.

Amen Lynette!
I second that, Lynette. I see so many small businesses trip up on Social media, because while the tools are free, they just do not know how to effectively use them. Those are the companies that Do social instead of understanding how to Be Social first. (And those are the same companies who then say that Social media does not work…)
+Jay Baer 's has written an excellent post and I really appreciate that you shared this +Lynette Young Businesses can't afford NOT to have a Social Media strategy in place… but it does need to be developed and integrated as a part of a larger overall business strategy.
+Cynthia K Seymour exactly. Social Media Strategy = Communication Strategy = BUSINESS STRATEGY. People wanting to be Twitter strategists or even social media strategists need to know you need to be a business strategist in reality.
ABSOLUTELY!! I completely and whole heartedly agree. Social Media strategies without dealing with Branding, Marketing and all aspects of Business communications fall short of the capabilities for this Communications Revolution. On the other hand, using Social Media tools in an "old school" marketing way is just spammy.
