You've heard of Moore's law, but what about a more women law?
Neelie Kroes statement “The Digital World is for Everyone” is widely co-signed.Neelie Kroes obtained a rare consensus for International Women's Day. Indeed, as Vice President of the European Commission, and the woman in charge of digital policy for Europe, she wrote a statement about the equality in the digital world and managed to have it signed by a wide range of senior voices.
This text was co-signed by European politicians such as European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Parliament President Martin Schultz, European Commission Vice Presidents Reding, Almunia, Rehn and Sefkovic and Commissioner Maire Geoghegan Quinn by leading women across the tech sector (from the President of Oracle and CEO of Random House to NGOs like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the most senior woman at Google) and also by the main telecoms industry groups in Europe (ETNO, ECTA, Cable Europe).
And that’s not the end, as companies and citizens can add their name to the text from 09h00 Thursday, Brussels time on this page, available in any European language :
http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/ict-and-women.htmlUK Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox notes that the figure could now be as low as 18% women in the tech sector, compared to 30% in 2000 (source: Microsoft). In the same time, there will be 700,000 or more ICT job vacancies in 2015, because there aren't enough people with the right skills to do the jobs this booming sector demands. If women participated at equal rates to men, these jobs could be filled and our economy would grow faster.
To accompany this action, a viral campaign is being conducted on Twitter with the hashtag #digitalheroines . Tweeting with this hashtag is a way to sign the EU statement and encourage more women into tech. People on Twitter are signing at a rate of one per minute!
