The NFL issued a DMCA takedown notice on Chrysler's own commercial on YouTube. Let's look at that. The NFL does not own the rights or content to the Chrysler commercial. Chrysler paid for the commercial and paid for the airtime. Yet the NFL thought / assumed the content was theirs? Tell me again how SOPA won't hurt anyone?

So what's the penalty for filing a bogus DMCA claim? Nothing, or effectively nothing? I think it should be prosecuted as vigorously as copyright infringement.
+Tim Elkins EXACTLY. Of course it's one big corp stepping on another, so some might not care. What happens if (when) it was a 'little guy' getting stomped on by the NFL (or any other large corp w/attorneys on staff)?
There doesn't seem to be any recourse for a false DMCA takedown. YouTube has to comply, else run the risk of 'harboring illegal content' I'm sure. The NFL probably just killed off millions of views of that commercial, assuming their peak viewing would be right after the SuperBowl.
Can Chrysler sue the NFL for lost views or revenue? No, I'm sure they can't. Not that I'm for an overly litigious stance on this, but plain and simple it was bullying for whatever reason.

It has been restored, yes. It was down last night right after the SuperBowl for a few hours or more. The Redditors caught it and published a screen cap of the DMCA notice.
+Lynette Young Like anything in business or litigation, the smaller or underfunded party is the one that ultimately loses. Wasn't Warner Music caught doing the same thing? Automated the entire process and made overly broad DMCA claims, even though these are supposed to be affidavits signed off by a real person. That strikes me as similar to the "robosigning" scandal in the mortgage industry. Firms claimed they reviewed every document but turned out to sign everything put in front of them, sight unseen, who cares that people might lose their homes in the process. One of the big music publishers also was caught filing bogus claims to take down some open source software they didn't like – and they think they deserve even more power?
Big mistake by NFL.
