If you are a fan of Google+ Hangouts (like I am!) you might want to take a look at updating your Google Voice plugin that runs Hangouts. The team that bangs wrenches on the system to find bugs and squash them found a way to fix some of the echo problems happening within Hangouts.
Still, use headphones especially with a laptop! The quickest way to cause echo in a Hangout is to use the internal microphone and speakers on a laptop. Happy Hangouts!!

the update is rolling out to everyone, but you can accelerate the upgrade by installing from that link.
note that if you are hearing yourself echo, it's not necessarily you who needs to upgrade. it's the person who's echoing your voice.
here's how to tell: speak for about 2 seconds straight. watch who's thumbnail has the green flicker happening under it. that's the person who needs to install.
