Doing the same thing, shout outs on google+, promotion on my FB business page, and sharing links to their site on my personal FB page 🙂
I am releasing a series of Arduino tutorials for people that don't know how to get past the blinking LED. For free.
I sent out an introduction email to connect two people that I think are brilliant and can benefit from each other professionally. I take personal satisfaction from knowing that I am connected to so many smart people and being able to create new opportunities. I feel I've benefited, even from afar, from so many people over the course of my career I love to use the knowledge and experience to make things work for my friends.
Of course there is a bitter side of me that pops up every so often when I've been stepped on or jaded in the past (intentionally or not) and now those people come sniffing around for assistance or connections. I really need to let that part 'go'….
I agree with letting go of the past, I feel that over time and under the right circumstances people change for the better. Though I'd still take it with a grain or two of salt. But, professionally speaking as long as there aren't any issues or old habbits inhibiting work flow and team work, then there isn't really a problem.
Any time I find out that local roller derby officials I've worked with are applying for a tournament or leadership type position, I do what I can to contact those in the position of selecting them or write a letter of recommendation. I also send out applications and encourage people who otherwise might second guess themselves to apply to bigger opportunities. I feel proud of them and myself when they get accepted or come back with stories of things they've learned.
This whole thread made me seriously think about how I view my professional past.
I wound up sending an email just now to someone that I sort of held a bit of a 'grudge' against. After meeting them several times & even running a meetup for them, I felt invisible. I realized it's probably me reading something into it, and wanted to let them know how much I value what they do, even if I'm not in their 'inner circle'.
While being acknowledged and accepted by people/certain people isn't what my life or career revolves around, it does quite a killer job on my self-esteem. Learning to let it go & focus on those people that I value & value me in return.
Oh! And the best advice I've gotten about an upcoming leadership position I'm holding this weekend was to publicly praise people for doing good work. Getting that confirmation from someone in a top position in front of your peers makes people want to continue doing good work in order to receive more positive reinforcement 🙂 I'm really looking forward to taking notes on peoples' work and pointing out the things they are doing well all weekend!
I too take great satisfaction in making introductions and connecting people. My job puts me in contact with lots of movers and shakers as well as people needing connections. when I can make a meaningful intro it really makes my day.
