er”>+Christine Paluch shared. WOW.
I'm a Trek fan for sure, and love the original series. (Tribbles anyone?) It seems Nichelle Nichols (Officer Uhura) did some really amazing things for women and African Americans. What a trailblazer and intelligent woman. New role model!!!!

When Nichelle Nichols Met Star Trek Fan Martin Luther King, Jr. [Video]
Not too long ago, we posted about Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura on Star Trek, reading for the role of Spock before the show became the show that we know and love today. But after the first season…

Pssst +J.C. Hutchins have you ever heard this story??
she the one I love
Thankful for this post!
I read about Nichelle's story a few months ago. She even still got the blunt of a ton of criticism from many of the producers and directors despite her amazing success. Her perseverance, courage and hope for change is amazing. One of the strongest early role models.
I didn't know about the criticism she got from the producers and directors…but kudos to them in regards to being brave enough to feature her when such roles were otherwise non-existent.
Incredible story but not only that…..Lord she was fine, even in her older years
She is really beautiful +Greg T… her voice, her looks, her personality. That early Star Trek series was remarkable in many ways and it was people like Nichelle Nichols who helped people change the way they thought about the world and the possibilities in the future.
+Lynette Young Yep. Great story.
Yeah the article I was reading was telling about how a lot of people who produced the show actually would try to not pay her. They didn't want her on a "primary" role, so those that supported her and wanted her there, would always find ways to get her into background roles as often as they could. She was also (if I remember right) paid half or less than half than all of the other members of the cast. It's been a while so I don't quite remember, but it was drastic enough to stick with me.
Just an aside: Here's one of the points that I had mentioned: "Nichelle Nichols had considered leaving the Star Trek franchise after the first season. Fed up with racist harassment, culminating with her learning that studio executives were withholding her fan mail, she submitted her resignation. She withdrew it when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. convinced her that her role was too important a cultural breakthrough to leave."
I found the clip here ( http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Nichelle_Nichols ) under her Personal Background. 🙂 Gorgeous woman she is.
wow that's interesting.
