I read this and went YEAH!! Among other things, I cannot stand 'celebraties' that dress the geek part (male or female) to try to be cool. Kiss off. The outside can't change the inside.
Years ago before it was cool to be a geek (warning: HIPSTER alert) we got the crap kicked out of us for being geeks. We were bullied. We didn't get dates.

Being a poser is not cool.

Dear Fake Geek Girls: Please Go Away – Forbes
Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it was like for me being a geeky girl growing up and what it's like for geeky girls nowadays. It's a totally different world. Now, a geek is synonymous with…

Amen +Lynette Young, I was a member of the Computer Club (yes) back in HS. Hard to get uncooler than that I daresay, lol.
Yep, strange to think that it is now cool to be a geek – so if it is cool to be a geek then it is not a geek right?
I'm confused! 🙁
Lol… you had to have seen it coming a couple of years ago when Barbie went Geek. I think Mattel even polled young girls about what Barbie's profession should be. Here's one article: http://blogs.investors.com/click/index.php/home/60-tech/1119-sign-of-the-times-barbies-a-tech-geek
Oh, man, why must you mention the bullying? F$&k….. ^_^
My bad +Ethan O'Donnell. The bullying I went through as a kid/teen still produces a nasty streak in me over 25 years later.
I've always identified more as a "nerd" but that Venn diagram in the article says I'm a "geek". Either way, my sentiments ae the same: I'm not a big fan of the fake geeks.
Ahh but what if all these 'geeks' now get bullied by PROPER geeks for not being geeks? 🙂
Remember the movie Revenge of the Nerds…?
It's almost like a gang initiation. If it hasn't been "beaten" into you that you're a geek/nerd, you probably aren't one yet. Self-proclaiming should get you chastised.
I am still proud of everything that makes me, me. ^_^
Spot on Barry! You can't choose to be a geek it is mass opinion. However if now being a geek is cool we have a paradox on our hands! BTW speaking like that does it make me a geek?
Here is the new Geek-sessory… Google Glasses. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/21/google-to-sell-terminator-style-glasses-by-years-end/
I get the rant. I will be honest after years of school and just taking up academic and technical interests for fun, I honestly could care less what people call themselves. I am just to old to care at this point.
If hipsters only do things "ironically" then wouldn't they have to be Hipsters ironically!?!
Well I ain't no geek. That's for sure. When I was a kid, I was more like Cindy Vortex.
Why are adults labeling themselves, or clinging to labels stuck on them when they were kids? Can some geek explain that to me?
My much better half tells me she keeps me around 'cuz I'm in-house tech support that can cook, too!
