I use Gmail for half of my email correspondance (the other half is done via my own email system for work). What this means for me is that ALL email I receive or send to a Gmail account shows that person's contact info on the right column. How many people do YOU know that use Gmail? Probably tons. If they haven't set up their Google+ profile (or have, but don't use the system) they look pretty empty and sad (to me) when I click over to find out more about them.
Think about this: When I click on the profile of (some) potential business connections what do I see? NOTHING. BLANK. ZIP. Let me tell you, it doesn't look so hot especially when they are pitching me about Google+. I can easily see they can't even be bothered to set up their GOOGLE profile. It's above and beyond Google+ at this point. Google is moving towards a unified profile across most of their products. Please, for the love of rainbows, if you know someone that has a Gmail account, clue them in a bit that they should be paying attention to all this.

Good post. I don't think many people have figured this out (partly because think Google is only just working this out themselves)
I am an avid Google users, with Gmail and Gmail apps for my business. But it even took me a while to see the woods for the trees.
Regardless of how sensible this may be in practical terms, this level of ubiquitous control of the web via one company is a very polarizing idea for many people.
Digital identity and time are valuable for business transactions. See ZMOT. 🙂
And reputation metrics are going to be huge, help us cut to the chase.
Inbox circles are great, you can watch first your work family and friend circles
"for the love of rainbows"…that made me chuckle 😀
hhhhh yeah me tooo
Most of my friends have college (not IT related). I invited them to Gmail and no one came.
One of my best friends, he doesn't like school and went to this life when he was 15. One day I lost in the city he lives, I called him. But he was busy and told me that: "Use your phone to Google it out". Ouch!
Now he still doesn't know about Gmail, but I think he doesn't need it. He has a food-shop, ~150 clients/ day.
The Gmail account that is associated to my Google+ profile is different from my professional email. Am I doing it wrong?
+Jeff Jockisch I'm watching the identity & influence metrics space. It still seems very confusing with a lot of snake oil.
There is a demand but I've also read a lot of criticism. Do you think we will find a way through to get true metrics?
+Lanie deVuch that is a great question. I use my Gmail account because at the time G+ started, I couldn't use my business email through Google Apps! When people add me to a circle using my Google Apps business email, I have to ask them to Circle me with this profile. So confusing and unfair that I can't merge both GOOGLE accounts to this profile.
Yes, +Simon Kong we will get there. Google already knows the way and is working on it as a part of SERP.
But as for public metrics, we have a ways to go. Klout is having trouble getting there given the difficulty and the pressure to monetize. I think this undermining public trust in the concept.
